Matilda Bay to Herrison Island – 24 Sept 06 – Trip report and photos

1561

A small group of paddlers were greeted by a beautiful morning at Matilda Bay for the paddle to Herrison Island.  Sunny, no wind and glassy water awaited.  Glenn, Lesley, Steve and Anne, all looking forward to a great day's paddling, Anne with her new sea kayak for its first paddle.

The first part of the paddle headed up the north side of the river, up past the old brewery site and kings park to the narrows bridge.  From there we crossed over and paddled up the South Perth foreshore with some dolphins, before taking a break near the Coode St jetty.   After a short break for morning tea we headed for Herrison Island and found a place to park the boats and get out for some lunch.

A lot of conservation work has been done on the island.  After lunch we went for a wander around the island, great bird life in the lakes and loads of fisherman hoping for a catch.

After lunch it was time to head back.  The south westerley had come in, but not too strong.  We paddled back on the city side of the river, checking out the Barrack St jetty as we went.  We were back at Matilda Bay by about 2 pm, just in time for a well earned afternoon tea at the Matilda Bay Tea Rooms.
