Half Cape-to-Cape Hike, 5 Ð 8 April

1551
To those of us Swannies who like to bushwalk, and who can handle two nights in the bush:
You are invited to join Richard and Ian to do the northern half of this famous walk.

Richard Jolly is organising the walk and Ian Garthwaite will lead it.

WeÕll start on Friday 6 April having stayed Thursday night in Grace Town. On Friday, weÕll do a car shuffle, have a briefing at about 1200 and start walking at about 1300. WeÕll walk 9.5 km Friday (about 21/2 hours), 18 km Saturday and 19 km Sunday. The scenery will be magnificent and our two overnight camp sites overlooking the ocean delightful. There will be swims and a waterfall shower to keep us cool along the way.

Parts of the walk will be reasonably hard, along about 3 km of beaches, over ridges and gullies with some sandy track sections as well.

To lighten our loads, we will try to organise ourselves into pairs to share camping and cooking equipment. Rucksacks should not weigh more that 18 kg, including 3 kg of water (3 litres).

Water will be scarce but manageable, hence the need to carry three litres.

Your footwear must be substantial and well broken in. There is a possibility of snakes on the track, so wearing gaiters will be compulsory. Gaiters will also help to keep sand out of your boots on the sandy sections. Gaiters can be hired from some camping and bushwalking stores. Canvas gaiters are cooler and less sweaty than synthetic ones.

Adequate sun protection in the form of suitable clothes, hat and sunscreen must be provided for.

There will be a compulsory meeting on Tuesday 27 March at the club rooms to discuss clothing, camping, cooking, transport and safety requirements.

For those who wish to test out their boots, rucksacks and stamina, Ian will lead a day trip on the week end of 31 March Ð 1 April, final date to be decided at the above meeting. This walk will not be compulsory, but anyone wishing to test their ability to carry 18 or so kiloÕs all day should seriously consider attending it. Walk location will probably be in John Forrest National Park

Call Richard or Ian till end of Feb and Ian March to April – Richard 9245 2094, Ian 9448 1452

As on all Swan Canoe Club trips, your trip leader will be prepared for all foreseeable emergencies and unexpected occurrences. HOWEVER, participants should bear in mind that to ensure that the walk/trip is an enjoyable and memorable occasion for them personally, they need arrive at the start properly prepared and equipped.

Please donÕt hesitate to give Ian a call if you have any questions on any part of the walk.
