Introduction to White Water Kayaking course

This course is to be confirmed – depending on weather.

This course is designed to introduce paddlers to kayaking on up to grade two white water and for those wishing to learn basic white water kayaking skills. This course is usually run at Walyunga, however location will depend on conditions, in short kayaks with spraydecks. Please contact instructors before the course regarding skill and capsize training in the short kayaks (Short Boat Skills Session) or if you have any questions.

Six hour course $100 for members and $165 for non-members.

Requirements
Must have good basic kayaking skills.

Serpentine Trip with Geoffrey Emery

GEOFFREY TO CONFIRM EXACT DETAILS OF THE TRIP CLOSER TO THE DATE DEPENDANT UPON WATER LEVELS

This interesting 20km paddle, starting in the Serpentine River near Karnup Road goes south, downriver through Kerulup Pool and into the Mandurah Lakes.

We weave through paperbark trees and into open water at Lake Amarillo, Guanarnup Pool and Yalbanberup Pool.

Skill Level: 5 hours for the average paddler

Upper Murray Trip with Colin Priest and Geoff Emery

Sunday 10th September 2023

Yarragil Brook – Baden Powell Water Spout.

This is an 11.5km paddle through trees and grade 1 rapids with a portage at the Island Pool Rapid and exit before Baden Powell Water Spout

P.F.D’s and helmets are compulsory and it is suitable for paddle fit novices, who will require a briefing on white water safety beforehand.

There will be at least two white water instructors and the Paddle Australia Guidelines will limit places to about eight paddlers. This trip is best suited to short plastic white water kayaks with a spray deck.

HARVEST MOONLIGHT PADDLE

Come for a winter’s evening social paddle on the swan, watch the moonrise and enjoy the river in the moonlight.

INTRODUCTION TO PADDLING A SEA KAYAK

This course is designed for people who have some previous kayaking experience, have the ability to perform basic paddling strokes and are able to swim at least 25 meters.

This course is conducted using sit in type sea kayaks. A club sea kayak and equipment are provided.

The course will provide information on:

  • different types of sea kayak design and material
  • sea kayak safety features
  • safety equipment
  • Western Australian boating regulations for kayaking on the ocean
  • paddle types
  • the use of a rudder and skeg

It will provide instruction on how to:

  • paddle forwards, backwards, turn, manoeuvre sideways and stop in an emergency
  • capsize and exit an upturned kayak (wet exit) while wearing a spray deck
  • launch and land a sea kayak
  • edge and lean a sea kayak
  • manoeuvre a sea kayak without the use of a rudder
  • use the paddle to help prevent a capsize (low brace support stoke)
  • perform an assisted rescue as the rescuer
  • perform an assisted rescue as the rescuee

A Swan Canoe Club Introduction to Paddling a Sea Kayak certificate will be awarded to people who have demonstrated competency in the skills required for paddling a sea kayak and a controlled wet exit wearing a spray deck.

These skills are normally a pre-requisite for easy club sea kayaking trips.

Pre-requisites: Able to swim 25 metres in paddling clothes and PFD. For juniors under 18 please email enquiry through to admin@swancanoeclub.org.au.

Equipment: provided

Members ($70) and Non-Members ($125) welcome

Cancellation Fees apply if withdrawing from the course:

  • 15% greater than 1 weeks notice
